OpenGate Camps
AI Summer Camp 2026
Free, hands-on AI education for elementary and middle school students, taught by high school mentors with backgrounds in AI, competition math, computer science, and research.
Zero Tuition
Nothing to pay and nothing to buy. Sessions run about an hour to 90 minutes, with no required homework in between.
Student Mentors
High school mentors who give feedback on what you build and answer questions while you are still stuck on them.
Curriculum
Four Weeks, Four Projects
A hands-on, project-based path from everyday AI tools to medical applications. No coding experience required.
Week 1
AI's Application in Everyday Use
Key Concepts
- ▹What artificial intelligence is, and what it is not, through everyday examples
- ▹Using tools like ChatGPT carefully for real tasks
- ▹Prompting with clear goals so the output is actually useful
- ▹How AI image tools work and where they fit into creative work
- ▹When AI helps, and when your own judgment still matters most
Project: AI for a Real Task
Students pick a concrete everyday task, use AI to help plan and refine it, and reflect on what the tool got right, what it missed, and what they still needed to decide themselves.
Week 2
AI's Role in Research and Academia
Key Concepts
- ▹Using AI to explore a topic and ask sharper follow-up questions
- ▹Fact-checking AI answers and noticing where models go wrong
- ▹Turning rough research notes into a clear, short write-up
- ▹Treating AI as a research aid, not a substitute for careful reading
Project: Research Mini-Brief
Students research a topic that interests them, check AI claims against reliable sources, and present a short brief that separates what they verified from what remains uncertain.
Week 3
Fundamentals: The Data Science Behind the Hype
Key Concepts
- ▹What training data is, and why it shapes what a model can do
- ▹How classification systems sort information and make automated choices
- ▹Spotting gaps, skew, and weak representation in a dataset
- ▹Why fairness matters when AI decisions affect real people
Project: Dataset Audit
Given a sample dataset, students investigate how it was built, look for bias or missing context, and present what those issues could mean for any model trained on it.
Week 4
AI's Role in the Medical Industry
Key Concepts
- ▹How AI is already used in medicine, from imaging support to triage tools
- ▹Turning a real health challenge into a problem AI might help with
- ▹Designing a proposal end to end: data needs, decision flow, and who benefits
- ▹Ethics in healthcare AI: safety, privacy, and tools people can trust
Project: Medical AI Proposal
Students research a community health challenge, design a careful AI-assisted approach, and pitch it to peers with attention to prompting, data, and ethics.
